"I see myself as a future managing director at Page, becoming a positive role model and advocate for the ‘[email protected]’ initiative and inspiring others as my directors have done with me"
What led you to recruitment from your background in estate agency?
I was fed up with working 8am-8pm every day and giving up my weekends to the office. I started to think about what transferable skills I had and where they would be best placed. A number of my colleagues in estate agency had made the transition to recruitment and it seemed the most obvious choice for a target based, competitive sales role.
When I started to consider recruitment I asked for recommendations of well known companies and every person I spoke to mentioned Page. I was initially attracted to the big shiny offices and the thought of working for a FTSE listed business, but after interviewing the big thing for me was the team based environment and the people I met.
What advice would you give someone with an estate agency background who wanted a job in recruitment?
My biggest challenge was learning to take my time and accepting that slow and steady wins the race. Estate agency is often all about volume and can be somewhat lacking in real relationship building. People are an uncontrollable product and won’t be rushed into making what can be the biggest decision of their lives. Patience, empathy and understanding are crucial.
Persistence, never taking ‘no’ for an answer and overcoming obstacles without giving up. Building rapport and feeling comfortable striking up conversation with anyone and everyone. Time management is important as well, planning your day to ensure you have time to fit everything it is crucial.
If you want to make the most amount of money in the shortest space of time possible, then stay where you are. If you want to build something long term, with scope to progress to a directorial or international role, then recruitment and more specifically Page are well placed to offer you that. You’ll also get your life back!
What are your career aspirations with PageGroup?
I see myself as a future managing director at Page, becoming a positive role model and advocate for the ‘[email protected]’ initiative and inspiring others as my directors have done with me. The best part is that said directors constantly reassure me that this can be my path should I choose it. They encourage me to work hard toward these goals even though it means me nipping at their heels.
PageGroup’s diversity, inclusion and ‘giving back’ initiatives are of the upmost importance. The company has matured so much in this area in the years that I have been here. As mentioned, ‘[email protected]’ has really resonated with me. As a young female looking to progress, it is extremely important to feel that Page support me in reaching my goals and that provisions are in place for those wanting to return to work whilst juggling a family.
A last word for those thinking of joining Page?
If you want to work for a meritocratic business, with an exciting management team, an ambitious growth strategy and as long as you are not afraid of hard work and bring the right attitude; I can assure you that you won’t regret it.
