The engineering sector has been severely impacted by the downturn and the level of recruitment of engineers in Japan has, in turn, significantly decreased. Historically, medium to large companies have typically had cause to recruit numerous engineers annually. However, the first half of 2009 saw a significant drop in such hiring trends and, in comparison to 2008, the total number of engineering job openings decreased by over 50%.
